SHARE THE ROAD

By Jim Roller, Jimmy Roller, James Roller

To me, this is a song that encourages the lonely. It tells a story of two lovers who have lived too long alone. Wounded and isolated, these two meet as the stars align, and give the rest of us hope that the moment is out there when we will meet up with the complementary life force that gives us a feeling of fulfillment, completion and satisfaction. Scroll down for full lyrics that go beyond what is in the recording.

Lyrics:

V 1

It was a lazy afternoon. The sun eclipsed behind the moon, and in the shadow of a ponderosa pine,

She tried to stay beneath the shade. Her thumb was raised. Her mind was made. The past was gone and she was moving down the line.

And somewhere out there further south, he headed north. He headed out. He had a heavy load to tow to Telluride.

He pulled away. He headed west. He prob’ly never would have guessed the day would end with someone special by his side.

Chorus:

Share the road. Won’t you share the road with me?

V 2

They met on highway 48. She was alone and he was late to find nepenthe for the sorrow in his brain.

She thought she saw something inside him when he offered her a ride, besides the summer heat became a summer rain.

He said, “The cab is kinda crowded, and I’m sure it’s not allowed, but they won’t know if I had company for a while.

So they made small talk headed down, and he began to clown around, and she said, “You look like a stranger to that smile.”

V 3

She said, “When I was very young, upon the wall a cross was hung, and daddy held the bible high and swung it hard.

But all the violence that he used turns out to constitute abuse, so if I keep it loose, I’m keeping up my guard.

But now I figure that’s his loss, I ran away and took the cross, and in its place it left a shadow on the wall.

Sometimes I think of life that way, a silhouette of yesterday, and what is gone turns out to linger after all.”

V 4

The sun set just before the moon, and they saw fit to share a room, and they made love as it had never been before.

And then the hours became the days, and soon the weeks passed fast away, and all the while it only left them wanting more.

She said, “My whole life it’s been me. That’s all I wanted it to be, but now somehow I’m starting to wonder if it’s true.”

And he said, “That ain’t no surprise, ‘cause when I look into your eyes I find the only thing I want is more of you.

V 5

He said, “My whole life I’ve been lost, when I was young I was accosted and it changed me.

And ever since I’ve been alone, even at home, and now I’m grown I see it stains me.

So I can’t help it be affected, my whole life I’ve been dejected in the chaos that’s been burning in my mind.

And while the journey may look foolish, it lead me right here to you, which in the scheme of things seems one hell of a find.”

V 6

He said, “I know that love is true because I shared it here with you, and now it haunts me.

The only thing that I can’t see is you attracted after me, and so it taunts me.”

And she said, “Yeah, well, that’s OK, because it always goes that way, and it’s the brightest light that makes the rest seem night.

So why not open up your eyes? You’d be surprised at all the times when I survived and everything turned out alright.”

V 7

How many live a life of hopelessness, not knowing that the road to share is waiting there beyond the next eclipse?

I wonder, might the stars afford us all just one more such accord? Are we about to share a road as good as this?

They headed out one summer morning in the faith that they were born to hold each other in another foreign land.

And that first day out on the road, that boy was humbled when she told him, “I delight inside each time you hold my hand.”
